Shattered diamond armour is a new state for classic diamond armour where, similar to elytra, the item won't disappear when it's durability runs out. shattered diamond armour could be restored with mending or diamonds as usual but could also be rebuilt better using new or existing materials inside a smithing table. Netherite gear for example would require shattered diamond armour. Needing to have broken diamond armour and without worry of losing diamond armour, after just a few hours, would both revitalise it's importance in-game and serve as a distinct progression marker something sorely missing ever since netherite became the new best gear. Needing shattered diamond armour also encourages combat and discourages mending, something else I believe positive for the games development.
Additionaly with these new mechanics. I would remove diamond armour from villager trading. My solution for it though would be a new simple armour similar to chain, as in essentially villager exclusive. Helmet and boots would be identical to current diamond. Chestplate and leggings would be half an armour point less giving one full armour bar missing. It would steer people out of settling while also giving strong armour early game to experienced players. It would also mean you have to actually mine or loot hard structures again to get diamond gear. This new armour set i'd make is steel.
