Help me stop killing the wandering trader (and llamas) for leads!

Whenever I am exploring and find an animal near a village that I want to bring back with me, but I never seem to have a lead. It would be amazing if villagers (shepherds or leatherworkers) could sell leads. It would make sense for shepherds to have and sell leads as it is part of their job to lead animals. Unfortunately, there have been many times I find myself in this predicament and end up killing the wandering trader in the nearest village when he appears because there is no other way to get leads while exploring without leaving the area (and animal I want) completely.
