Allays have always been a mob that nobody really uses. They are just kind of there, doing basically nothing with a feature that is only useful in very niche circumstances. However, Allays have lots of potential to be an excellent mob that could rival the villager into being the most useful mob in Minecraft.
Instead of having to give an item to an Allay, they should be fully tamable instead. All you would have to do to tame one is to walk into one. They will also have their own dedicated menu, for which you can control/alter them depending on their variant.
Here are three variant ideas that I have for them:
1. Collector Allay- Same Allay we have in-game but 10x more useful. This Allay will have two phases, Active and Neutral. In its Active phase, it will follow the player and be able to break any harvestable blocks, which the player will control by holding right-click on a block within 12 blocks of range. Neutral is the same as current Allays.
2. Builder Allay- This Allay would be dark blue in color and will place blocks further away "similar to the delayed Crab Claw item". Their main feature, however, would be that they can build a 10x10x10 block structure that you can save in the Allay menu, and have them place a block from that saved build every second for each Builder Allay.
3. Effect Allay- This Allay would be golden in color and will give a random positive effect to their owner. Instant Health, Strength, Speed, etc.
