It would be great to have a feature in world generation (Maybe an optional setting) that introduces cardinal directions (North, South, etc.) and for the temperature-based biome generation to make it colder around the north areas and warmer near the equator. Because the map is so massive in Minecraft, it may also be a good idea to add a world border so you don't spend 20 hours wandering through a desert. This way, players can interpret where they might find a certain biome. For example, if I wanted to find a taiga biome I could just go north and find one. If players don't want to always know where biomes are, they can simply turn this setting off.
