Transportation is one of Minecraft’s largest short comings. In a game that is focused on building, the only official infrastructure you can build for transportation is mine cart rails. These travel slower than horses and much slower than elytra wings, both of which require no infrastructure or material investment past their acquisition. Players take advantage of the low friction of blue ice to create extremely fast ice roads with boats. This requires a large amount of resource gathering and can be used to transport mobs and items. However, they don’t actually make sense. They are a boat being rowed over ice (often through the nether).
My idea is to take advantage of this ice mechanic but to utilize it in a purposeful way rather than having players take advantage of unintended game mechanics. This would be done by adding a new type of rail to the game that mine carts are able to travel at or near the speed one can achieve on an ice road. These would be crafted with 6 blue ice replacing the normal iron in the rail recipe. The middle piece could either be iron, red stone, or a diamond (fits with the blue theme and provides a use for diamonds in the late game).
I believe this feature would be a good “yes and” for implementing an official feature based off of what players have created out of necessity. This feature also keeps regular rails unchanged in the game, thus preserving their behavior in red stone systems.
