Phantoms are incredibly poorly designed.
Despite being a sandbox game, survival Minecraft does have a dynamic difficulty mechanic. Not the one in the menus (Easy, Normal, or Hard) ; Not the local difficulty; But the day night cycle.
Choosing to go to bed in Minecraft skips the potential of hostile mobs appearing in usually safe areas. And while you can light up areas and build barriers to create safe to roam regions at night, the average person will likely just go to a bed and skip the night. This on it's own is great.
Now, in survival mobs drop meaningful and valuable items. Gunpowder, bones, arrows, string, spider eyes, and a variety of other unique items (while they are found in some chests these items are most accessible and renewable from mobs).
This means to get these items in a reasonable quantity one typically must choose to stay awake during the night and fight hostile mobs. This puts you at risk of dying. A risk vs reward system.
I think this is a great system as it balances itself and allows players to make the informed decisions on whether they want to risk the night.
HOWEVER
In comes the phantom. The bane of builders and explorers everywhere. The phantom disrupts this balance by punishing you for being awake at night. It punishes you for not sleeping in a bed. For leaving home. For exploring and building for long periods IN A SANDBOX GAME.
I ran out of room here so my case stands poorly. Simply put, change them. Please.
