Just started a game on normal difficulty just trying to enjoy minecraft with my girlfriend, hop in the water simply to scout the nearby area and we were both bombarded by 3-5 drowned WITH TRIDENTS!!! We just looted some stuff from a village so we wanted to go reclaim our items. We spent the last 20 minutes trying to kill these guys and get our stuff back from the very start of the game. Eventually got fed up with it and are now giving up on the whole idea. Overall I prefer terraria and hadn't been on minecraft in a while, now I remember why. They know how to balance things or at least quickly change things when brought up by their player base.

They are way overpowered. The fire speed is too fast. They see you from a mile away. They will chase you to the end of the earth too.

I ran from one at night time onto the shore and he followed me onto and after sprint hopping for like a hundred blocks I thought I would have lost him, however I kept sprint hopping for another 300-400 blocks to explore the area. I stopped to craft something and I heard the trident impacting the ground not too far from me. He'd followed me for nearly half a kilometer. It's kind of a ridiculous common enemy.

It should either be nerfed, far less common, or only spawn in certain places. Or frankly a combination of those.

My concern is more for villages with extensive structures that extend into river biomes, especially if those structures are also elevated such that they can be targeted from deep within the river.  There's little defence against trident-wielding drowned as iron golems sink quickly and the the drowned still persist in the day when the village is supposed to be safe.  I don't want to build a 10-block high wall around the village or trap each villager in a trading-hall style setup but until trident-wielding drowned are altered in some way that's the only way to guarantee their safety.
