With this new snapshot giving us a new texture and new animations for bats, I feel like it would be a good time to reconsider the bats' in-game mechanics. For example, instead of always flying around randomly, bats can actively seek out blocks that have a low light level. Currently, bats fly around randomly and don't really seek a place specifically. I feel like if you light up a cave or another room dark enough for bats to spawn in, the bats should try to avoid the blocks with a higher light level and seek out lower light levels. and once all blocks are sufficiently lit up, the bat will fly around aimlessly until it finds a dark spot. I feel like this could be a fun new mechanic us players can mess around with.
Another mechanic that can be changed about the bat is the light level required for the bat to spawn. Currently, the maximum light level is 7, but I think it should be changed to 2 or 1. This change is mainly for those of us who like making builds with low light levels. As it stands, the only options we have to prevent bats from spawning is to use mods or to use the /kill @e[type=bat] and putting it into a repeating command block. The problem about the latter option is that those of us that make builds with low light levels in survival worlds don't have access to command blocks.
In conclusion, the bat is a mob with potential and I feel that with this new snapshot introducing new textures and animations for the bat is a good opportunity to improve bats.
