I still trying to figure out the best way to make it work for complex recipes, the only thing it came from my mind is that would be nice to have a filter slot system like the crafting table recipes

Alternative to that, would be the crafter emit more redstone signals like:

    0 to 9 - each slot filled

10 to 16 - each amount of craftables items already filled

we can use the 10+ signal as a check if i can craft more than one item to activate it once, leaving always one recipe filled as a item filter, allowing to just fill hoppers with the items needed and they'll sorted by itself inside the crafter.

While testing with my wife (which is more a "decoration person" more or less of a "redstone person"), she liked the block idea to make more decorative items and faster, but the execution put her away from it, we agreed it will make more sense to lose one crafting by leaving on it as a filter than dealing with how the difficult (and space consuming) scales for each auto crafting system would need.

Also this would make the whole experience more unified, simple recipes (like iron only ones) already just need a hopper, a Redstone Comparator to check if it is filled to make it work, having almost the same experience to complex recipes would be excellent to introduce redstone to casual and new players, and convinient for redstone experienced ones and hardcore players.

I agree with the other commenter that a signal strength of 10 for all useable slots having multiple items would be game changing for the average player. 11-16 might not be useful imo, but the 10th signal allows users to guarantee that their recipes will not break without advanced redstone use. It will only take one circuit for complex recipes to work easily. A non-technical player will never use the crafter for anything complicated if this feature does not come in. The only downside I see is that this might possibly be too powerful - but it really only provides easy access to the feature for everyone. I will look for another post where it specifically suggests this in the main post and link it here, and if I do not find one, I will post one to the best of my ability.

I feel like this is the exact oposite of what the crafter should do. This would make it too simple and overpowered. You have to keep in mind that every new mechanic needs balancing. Where'đ the fun in redstone when you have such a straight forward answer to everything. "The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees one's self. And the arbitrariness of the constraint serves only to obtain precision of execution." - Igor Stravinsky

Would like to express my frustration with this as well. if we can't choose the recipe we want, allow us to set it and only activate if there are enough items for it beyond the base amount given.

Example: Add 9 iron ingots, even if given a redstone signal it would NOT activate until a total of 2 iron ingots for all 9 slots are available

The base layer of items would act as a 'template'

I do prefer the OPs option better however as in my example such a thing like an auto crafter using minecarts wouldn't be possible.

But without either option it becomes very frustrating to get so many iron bars and heavy weight pressure plates when the signal doesn't line up with the available recipe.

setting say 32 iron ingots in each slot within the crafter is very wasteful, and still can break easily by either getting too many items at once, or not enough. Because of this the crafter has limited options to such recipes like nether bricks, bricks, copper blocks, dried kelp blocks, ie things that only have a single material and no other conflicting valid recipes.
