People suggesting the crafter recipe should be more late game (e.g. with netherite) do not understand that this would completely ruin the crafter. As a Redstone component, the recipe needs to be somewhat accessible (like any other Redstone component) because, as with any other rs component, the effective use will only be possible when combined with other components in (large) contraptions. Without hoppers, observers, droppers etc. the crafter itself is not that useful. And as for any other larger contraption, a lot of resources will be needed, thus, making it a mid to late game feature.

Add a crafting book or a way to save the out for input ingredients

I really like the current iteration of the crafter. The crafting recipe is appropriately balanced; the challenge should be in using the crafter, rather than obtaining it. With that said, I think it's reasonably approachable for casual players. There are many simple redstone setups which can be used to insert items in a specific order, and toggling slots provides an easy way to insert items in the correct shape. The comparator signal makes sense, and is not too difficult to detect for automation. Once the update goes live, there will surely be endless tutorials on how to build machines for shaped crafting of specific recipes. Machines which can be configured to craft any recipe are also possible, and provide a unique challenge to design and build.

However, I would like to propose one additional functionality for the crafter: The ability to fill and empty bundles. To empty a bundle, a bundle can be placed in the crafting grid by itself; the crafter will output the emptied bundle along with its contents. To fill a bundle, place it in the crafting grid along with other items; the crafter will output the filled bundle along with any items that did not fit inside.

This change would provide a reliable way to automate storage of items in bundles, and make it possible to sort bundles from other items (for example: attempting to fill a bundle with another bundle). I think the crafter is the perfect mechanism for this purpose.

Finally, for the concerns about lag: just fix MC-81098 already!

Lover the new crafter texture. It looks much better. But please don't change the texture again.

    Several thoughts about the crafter:

The crafter was good in its state upon release, but the recent changes of adding in a greater delay take away a lot of depth with how the crafter could be use in technical gameplay.

Some positive changes in my opinion is to allow the crafter to be quasiconnected like other redstone components in Java edition

I would love if you could quasi-power the crafter like you can a dropper

Adding the cooldown for the crafter in the latest snapshot seems like a change for the worse: it is already limited by hopper speed, would be cool to be able to continue crafting things faster. Is there a reason the cooldown was added?

The changes to the crafter in 23W46A which increased the delay of the block to 4 game ticks is detrimental to the functionality of the block. Just looking at the auto crafting aspect this has significantly nerfed the speed at which the crafter operates at making many builds from previous snapshots dysfunctional. The types of builds that could take advantage of the single tick crafter delay were bulky and took a lot of effort to design to crafter as fast as they did for complicated recipes. The nerf is unneeded as it would take many of these complex machines to match the speed of player crafting since hundreds of crafts can be done in just a few seconds by a player. Aside from the crafting the crafter was also useful in making counters and clocks as it did not behave the same as a dropper. The difference in delay between a crafter and a dropper opened it up for varied uses that were not possible before and expanded the gameplay opportunities for those technically inclined.

i think either the original texture or a complete redesign would be best. however, the top texture is perfect.

The first crafter texture (the one shown during Minecraft Live and the first few snapshots) was the best in my opinion. Please change the texture back to the previous version.

The new 4gt delay makes every contraption worse and offers no benefits. Please revert this.

The crafter should be as fast as it was in previous snapshots as it would allow for less backlog in storage systems/farms which would make it less likely to break the contraption it is receiving items from and reduce lag as well.

Please revert the changes from 23w46a to the previous iteration, Both the texture and functionality were better prior to this snapshop.
The tick changes to Copper bulbs are even worse, as they eliminated their main advantage in redstone systems.

Please revert the change that adds a 4gt cooldown to the Crafter. The Crafter is a different block from Droppers and Dispensers. Hoppers fill it differently. It interacts with containers differently. It doesn't have quasi-connectivity like Droppers and Dispensers do. The argument for consistency is flawed.

The short cooldown of the Crafter enabled use cases beyond autocrafting. The simplest and most useful being a fast basic counter. A counter that can be clocked every tick has a lot more use cases than one that can only be clocked every fourth gametick, I think this goes without saying but here we are.

I think it would be cool if the crafter had a special mode like a comparator, which would allow it to lock/unlock slots based on the signal strength of Redstone going into the side of the crafter. The first 9 signal strengths should each be dedicated to toggling a single slot in the crafter. Let's say we pressed a button which sends a redstone signal with a strength of 7 into the crafter. This would toggle the lower left corner of the crafter (slot 7). If that slot was enabled (unlock), it would then disable (lock) it and vice versa. Even after the button is pressed, the crafter would still remember its previous inputs, so you could design a redstone machine that creates the configuration of slots you want. If I sent the sequence 5 and then 7 for example, it would lock slots 5 and 7 and give us the crafting configuration for leggings. There's even 6 more Redstone signals you could use. I think signal strength 15 should be dedicated to enabling all of the slots and 14 should be disable all of the slots. There are still 4 more signal strengths that could be used, so many we could save custom configurations in the crafter. The crafter slots would still be configurable manually for non-technical players.

Also, I think it makes more intuitive sense for the items to be released from the top of the crafter instead of on the side. It could work like a dropper where if a container is directly above it, the items will automatically be transferred between them.

Hello, i really like the option to use the crafter fast because it made it a really good and compact part in redstone contraptions.

Strongly disagree with the recent comments about the tick updates. It makes way more sense for the crafter to match the timing of other dispensing blocks. It's still fast enough that it will be able to craft items faster than it can be filled.

I also disagree that it should be able to be triggered by quasi-connectivity. QC is a clear bug that while it may have reasons to exist for other blocks for history reasons it should not be added to new blocks. Really though, QC should have been patched as soon as it was discovered, it's not internally consistent with how redstone works and there's no reason to know that it works the way it does just from what's in the game. It's inconvenient as often as it is convenient and really just hurts the normal players who can't understand why their basic circuits don't work the way they expect.

I do agree that the first texture shown was the best so far though.

Please consider being able to lock the recipe in the crafter so that we don't have to build giant laggy Redstone contraptions. The balance to gameplay is that you would lock in one lot of the entire set of ingredients as the template that would remain until you unlocked and removed them.

I think the crafter is just about perfect as is. Many of us DON'T want to see a "you can pick a recipe from a the recipe book and it just crafts that". The way it is set up now is more flexible. It can be used to easily make a single recipe. And more complex Redstone contraptions can be made allowing the crafting of many items from a single crafter. The implementation first try was spot on.

Revert the change to the Crafter's tick delay. The bug report listed as accepted in the new snapshot was obviously not a valid bug report, rather, just someone calling for "consistency" with Dispensers. This very blatantly ignores the fact that Crafters and Dispensers are completely different blocks with completely different use cases.

You had the crafter right on the first try. The crafter is so inherently different from any other container in the game that I'm unsure why it needed to be "brought in line" with the other containers. The way it worked before was so much more useful and interesting since it could be used as more than just "a dropper that crafts". I really hope you go back to the way you had them in 45a.

TNT duplication and many other means of duplication have been a problem/exploit/feature/bug for years in Minecraft. It is clear that most have not been patched because of their usefulness and community dependence on them (e.g., TNT tree farm). Now with the addition of the crafter, these duplication glitches/bugs could be removed. For example, carpets can now sustainably be farmed through automatic sheep shearing and then crafted into carpets instead of duplicating carpets. One issue remaining preventing this full removal of duplication glitches: sand needs to be made renewably. Most mods have some sort of grinder which will grind stone to cobble, cobble to gravel, gravel to sand. It is clear that the limiting factor is primarily community reliance on TNT duplication and by simply adding a method to grind down cobble stone to sand, the community could finally have automatically restocking TNT-based farms in an ethical way. This has been flagged by Mojang employees on social media many times previously. The solution is really quite simple now that there is a crafter, the sand is the limiting factor.
Given that 1.21 is a redstone focused update, this would be the perfect opportunity to also add a renewable method of sand production that is better than relying on wandering traders and patch duplication exploits. This goes hand in hand with the addition of the crafter.

I want to preface - I love the crafter, but I would love to see the draining of items from a crafter mimic the filling functionality. Right now the crafter fills the lowest quantity item first, and when draining it just drains from top left. I would propose that when emptying items out of a crafter it would remove the highest quantity slot first. This would be intuitive, as it matches how the crafter is filled (in reverse of course), and would allow interesting red stone components.

The changes made to both the crafter and the copper bulb in 23w46a were detrimental to their functionality and usefulness. The delay should be removed from the crafter, and the bulb should go back to having a 1 game tick delay.

so, as a technical player it felt kinda bad to have the nerf on the crafter previous speed together with the precise redstone timings with the copper bulb, they were pretty good for very specific uses before the nerf.
i know its more aimed "to be consistent" but at this point its kinda feeling like "more of the same".
dont get me wrong, i love the concept of crafters and its a really cool new automation block, but i think its valid to point out that it could have been a tool for more creative uses, specially on compacting redstone contraptions that already exist.
i dont think being how it was before made any difference to non technical players since it would work on base redstone ticks anyways so nothing was improved either.
i suggest you to roll it back if possible, and many thanks for the good work so far.
