Fireflies could be added to the game in the form of a particle effect attached to a new type of grass. At night, grass containing fireflies would have small glowing lights both in the grass itself, and floating in a small area around the grass as a particle effect. The grass would generate on mud and dirt in swamps and mangroves, introducing a unique night-time ambiance to these biomes.
This representation of fireflies is true to their real-life habitat and behaviour:
- Association with grass -> Fireflies are often found in wet grassy areas.
- Glowing particle effect in both the grass and surrounding air -> During their night-time displays, male fireflies fly above the grass in search of a mate, while female fireflies sit on blades of grass and glow to attract passing males.
Firefly grass would also utilise mechanics that are already present in-game, as we already have particle-releasing blocks (spore blossoms) and blocks that change their state at different times of day (daylight detectors). Combining these two mechanics into a block that releases particles at a certain time of day could be an achievable way to introduce fireflies to the game.
