For datapack creators like me, it would be incredibly helpful to have an NBT tag in equipment items that controls their maximum durability. Imagine a wooden sword with 1000 points of durability! Wouldn't that be a sight?
A good use case for custom equipment durability controls are RPG datapacks where item durability can be factored in for balancing.
This also removes convoluted methods of calculating item durability with scoreboards and commands as the durability is already handled by vanilla game code.
