Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

YES! I've played in a world for hundreds of hours and it takes a long time just to collect a handful of sherds. I have a large base and would like to decorate it, maybe you could use emeralds or bricks and even the items that the sherds represent.

Put in other more accessible but valuable items with the sherd to create a copy

I don't think it should be crafted with a brick but instead using 4-8 clay balls with the intended sherd to be copied in the middle. With this idea, the original sherd will return to player's inventory and make a new item called a "(Sherd Design) Casting". This new item would then need to be smelted in a furnace to then produce a "copy" of the sherd. This still promotes exploration to find the many types of sherds, but also allows for mid-to-late game auto farming to allow Decorated Pots to be used a lot more often in builds.
