The current armor trims work with a material that defines a specific color on the armor.
However with swords and tools, customizing the color of the trims with material and armor trims made for the said tools could be cool but considering it's possible to have 3D tools using resources packs, I think it'd be better (especially for swords) to customize the shape of the handle (sorry for my English I'm not sure if it's the right word) and of the blade, or even to customize both color and shape of the tools using different kind of trims and materials!
The trims for swords/pickaxes and so on would have something that says "apply to: swords" and so on, and "Shape trims" or something like this to say it's a trim that'll affect the shape of the item, and at the same time, some other trim would have "apply to: swords" (or something else) but have another line saying "color trim", or something that says the same thing, it was an example (and armor trim would get this same line too so we know it doesn't affect the shape)
Regarding the resource pack side and the custom trim for tools, it could work like the current armor trims for the color, but for the shape, I think it should be possible to customize it with resource pack aswell as a standalone texture and json file, so for resource pack maker, if they want to update their 3D pack with this update, they could include 3D version of the trim that affects the shape.
