I've seen a similar proposal but wanted to put my own spin on it. My idea is a skill progression system where you simply get better at your tasks. Your cooking becomes better and yields more beneficial food, but starting out with lackluster "charred meat" or the like. This obviously wouldn't be limited to cooking, and would have a place in combat, crafting, and repairing. Maybe you can hold your breath longer if you spend lots of time underwater or you can jump 2 blocks instead of one after maxing out acrobatics. It would provide more insensitive to explore everything Minecraft has to offer. And then if you die, some or all of your skills become halved so you have to polish them up again. I know there is pushback on anything potentially rpg, but I believe it would be a good step forward and would also reduce the pain felt of having to restart a world after enough updates have come. You can still appreciate the crafting sandbox element while also making the adventure part more enjoyable.
