Mobs in any version of Minecraft suck to fight they are annoying and not challenging in any circumstances due to the shield. Most the enemies are the exact same to fight due to the shield and this makes exploring and building tedious and anything relating combat boring and unfun. I suggest taking some changes from the Combat snapshots but making some alterations. Add multiple weapon types and each one would have a legendary weapon that's stronger with unique enchantments but has less durability than diamond. For example add a javelin that is essentially a trident (Trident being the legendary version) that can hit from 5 blocks away if you space attacks out but does less damage than a sword and has no multi hit capabilities. The axe could disable shields more and have an insane critical hit but low range (low or short being 2 or less blocks) and no multi attack. A hammer with short range multi hit and disables shields for even longer than the axe but with less damage. A halberd with a 4 block max range and the best multi hit capabilities with sacrificed speed and damage. And maybe even a one block ranged dagger with high damage that's risky. These would add more combat potential this along with some unique mobs like say trolls that have 25 hitpoints that have a chance to be using any of the weapons or ogres with high shield damage and knock back to spice up combat allowing everyone to have their own play styles and swords would be the jack of all trades weapons.
