  What if, along with the armour trims and upgrade template they added "armour modifications". They could change the shape of an armour piece like you mentioned.

  I want a gold crown but you could trim when you craft, use 3 gold helmets so it’s more durable and what ever gems you use in crafting would show up. I use a gold helmet in the nether and it breaks to often with mending and unbreaking

  Makes more sense to just craft a crown. A trim doesn't alter overall shape, just adds to existing shapes.
