I think that you should be able to use the same process of trimming to add features to your armor, for example, trimming with elytra will allow you to fly while still looking stylish because you are wearing a chest plate with wings. Trimming with a shield could make the armor bulkier and stronger with the downside of getting hungry quicker while wearing it.
