What is it?
My proposed Petrified Wood would be similar to the already-existing Petrified Oak Slabs in that it has qualities of stone (can only be mined with pickaxe, explosion-resistant, cannot be set on fire, etc.); however, it would have a new texture to differentiate it from the standard Oak. Petrified Wood in real life ranges from brown to gray, but as we already have plenty of brown wood, I suggest that it be on the grayer side.
How do you obtain it?
Petrified Wood obviously would not be directly growable, so alternate methods of obtaining must be made available. I can think of 3 fitting methods:
1. Naturally spawning in structures, possibly in fossils and possibly replacing Oak wood.
2. Spontaneous creation via a lightning strike, similar to glass with sand.
3. Crafting with 4 slimeballs/magma cream and any log.
Why is this good for the game?
There are multiple reasons which lead me to believe adding a Petrified Wood type would actively help the game feel in many areas. For one, the Petrified Oak Slab is one of the very last unused blocks from the game's earlier days that has not been removed or repurposed, and this would be giving it a proper purpose for the first time in a long time. Next, a new unique wood type allows for a lot more customization in builds; there's a reason everyone loves new wood types. I'm out of space, continuing below.
