Dear Mojang,
As somebody who has had many Minecraft worlds, the most annoying part of starting a new one always seems to be the task of enchanting everything. The same problem applies to dying and losing everything; it can be super frustrating to die and lose all progress since the game can be very cruel with the lengthy process of re-enchanting everything.
Villagers are necessary in order to unlock enchantments like mending and although I don’t dislike their involvement, they can be annoying to work with and their necessity can make it monotonous since the player is forced to create a villager trading setup in every world.
Personally, I think the enchanting table should enable access to a skill tree - of sorts - that allows you to enchant items at the expense of lapis. Keeping with the current bookshelf system, the way to unlock enchants would be to find the necessary enchanted books as loot and place them inside of the new chiselled bookshelves that need to surround the enchanting table. The player would also require progressively higher levels to equip each individual enchantment, but the levels are not consumed upon enchanting, nor are the books inside the bookshelves.
The books don't need levels as the levels can be unlocked inside the ui after reaching certain exp lvl milestones. The search for enchanted books adds incentive to exploration and the exp requirements + progression can justify tiered enchantments.
Sincere regards,
