    Mojang has rejected a pure mix potion approach.

    Personally, I think some mix lesser potions would be a fun mechanic for a cauldron. You could aim to put in the ingredients for two effects and you get on negative effect as well. This would give a sort of progression in potion making while still making something a bit unique as well. The positive effects would be only LvL 1 in strength and/or time and the negative a shorter time but a consequence of mixing. Creating single property potions in a cauldron would also get a negative effect but only for a 1/4 of the duration. 

    For example, Strength and Swiftness could have the nausea effect, you could be really strong and fast, but harder to focus with the screen wobbling around for half the time you have the effect.
