TL;DR use pottery shards on terracotta to make murals.
I really like the appearance of decorated pots as they've been implemented in 1.20. They're visually a lot clearer and far more aesthetically pleasing than the initial designs shown during Caves & Cliffs. Additionally, obtaining pot shards through archeology breaths new life to structures and enhances exploration which I appreciate. That being said, I don't think the pots achieve on the goal of allowing player storytelling, arguably the most exciting element of the concept. I see two limitations preventing coherent storytelling:
1. Too few slots
2. Not enough shard variants
I propose that pottery shards can be placed on side faces of terracotta blocks. Grids of these blocks together would make for great decoration and allow for more storytelling opportunities. The system would also tie in nicely with the archeology system and structures could even include partially missing wall murals.
Ideally, there would be a huge variety of pot shards to make pots/murals truly unique, to have more elements to tell stories with, and give collectors something to search for. Specifically, pot shards depicting people allow for all kinds of player-made narratives about the history of their world. Shards depicting important elements in Minecraft mythology such as a nether portal and eye of ender also seem relevant.
Below are several examples of murals comprised of multiple blocks depicting new pottery shards.
