Firstly, pots should be dyeable. This would add a whole layer of customization to the pots and make them more versatile! The colors should match terracotta , as they're the same material.

I think four is not enough shard designs - there should at least be 8. If storytelling is the aim here, add more ways to enhance said storytelling! Shard ideas:
-
Creeper face
-
Sword
-
Armour pieces
-
Chicken (or other passive mobs)
-
Grass block
-
Maybe even the sniffer, since it roamed the overworld in the time of these shard's creation

Practical

A single chest has a 9x3 storage grid. The pot should have a 3x7 storage grid on interaction, as it is slimmer.

A super fun idea I had revolves around the stacking of pots. What if we made it so these storage items stack vertically, rather than horizontally, like double chests? What this means is that if you stack two pots on one another, you will get a 6x7 storage grid rather than a 3x7. This would be great for hiding storage beneath the floors of your base! I think up to 4 at the most should be the maximum that you can stack a pot, as any more would make them far too overpowered. Even three should be enough.

Any type of plant should be able to be placed inside the top of the pot. This would be both a decorative and practical use, as putting, say, an oak sapling will plug the pot closed and no player will be able to access the storage inside. They will be removable with a single punch/with shears. This makes fun ways to hide items in around your base!
