Currently the template duplication recipe is affordable for later game armor (diamond and netherite) but not for early game armor. spending 7+ diamonds a piece to customize anything other than diamond or netherite is impractical when those diamonds could just be used on diamond armor instead or saved for netherite. I feel that this discourages customizing early game armor in anything other creative mode.
My solution for this can be broken down into 4 steps:
1. Make the templates reusable and remove the duplication crafting recipe
2. Give the smithing table a 3x3 crafting grid.
3. Take the diamonds from the template recipe and move them to the trim recipe (3 diamonds above, 3 diamonds below, for example).
4. Change the diamond cost for non-diamond or netherite armor to better fit each type (gold for gold, iron for iron and chain, leather for leather and turtle).
This change would keep the increased value of diamonds as they are still necessary for the diamond and netherite customization/upgrade, but at a cost of 6 diamonds a piece instead of 7 (which isn't much of a change). This also makes armor customization more affordable for the other types. I also want to make clear, incase I haven't done a good job of doing so, that this is meant to add onto the trim recipe requirements of the template, piece, and trim material.
An additional benefit to giving the smithing table a 3x3 crafting grid could be the addition of allowing armor and tool recipes to be crafted at the smithing table.
