It should be possible to craft 9 diamond armor pieces into 1 diamond. This maintains the same ratio of materials recieved back that one would get from smelting gold/iron armor, seeing as one armor piece gives you one nugget, nine armor would supply one ingot. Superflat players do not have access to mineable ore, which is the only massively reliable way to get diamonds, and with the new armor trim and netherite upgrade tablets requiring diamonds to get a lot of, it will be nearly impossible to enjoy the new armor trim feature and make getting netherite near impossible for superflat players where it previously wasn't. A renewable and balanced source of diamonds is necessary for a core gameplay feature to be enjoyed by all players, and since villagers offer diamond armor and tools in trades, it only makes sense to be able to turn those back into diamonds at a reasonable level of exchange, e.g. the 9 to 1 ratio seen in iron and gold armor sets.
