It would be helpful if there was a rare but renewable way to get these. I understand the need for exploration, but SMP servers with a healthy player base will have scarcity issues. Having a more difficult, but renewable way to obtain the templates would help multiplayer servers to have a more balanced ecosystem. I'd recommend piglin bartering, or maybe an extremely expensive recipe where you put in 2 diamond blocks in place of the template, something of that sort.

Could this idea be expanded to other forms of upgrades? things that aren't inherently better or worse than netherite, just different? Like a copper upgrade with its own copper upgrade template that makes your armor less durable but you're slightly faster, things along that vein?

I love the game and all but diamonds are already hard enough to find for me I can only get on an hour every other day and I have the worst luck when it comes to funding structures so if you guys add this can you please make bastions more common and diamonds spawning in the vein sizes they used to as I shouldn't have to spend 5 hours strip mining at y -54 and get 3 diamonds max and now it's even harder to get netherworld gear

One large issue I have with the upgrading of netherite requiring an upgrade template is that it is one template per piece. That's 6 for a whole set. These are found in relatively uncommon and dangerous structures throughout the world. Maybe for one player you could justify it, but I play minecraft with friends, and we would have to comb through so many bastions for all 8 of us to get full netherite sets, or else have it be first come first serve and favor those with less busy schedules. I get wanting to make powerful upgrades more expensive, but this makes it near impossible for my group to all get the gear we want. Maybe instead of having the template only work once it could have drurability? Even just making it give 2 upgrades instead of one would make a world of difference to my multiplayer servers.

I kinda like the idea of using an upgrade template, but what we got now just makes acquiring netherite equipment too laborious, and having upgrade templates being non-craftable, may make it near impossible to get netherite equipment on servers. I just think we would be better off without it.

I get that the point is to make netherite equipment harder to get, but the root of that problem lies with ancient debris, and to solve that issue, I think Mojang should take some inspiration from Terraria and Valheim, which tells the player to go find and defeat a boss, or deal with a challenging event, to access the next tier of equipment. Right now, all you gotta do is dig, and that is true 90% of the stages of Minecraft.

Upgrading, however, is a solid concept that should definitely be expanded on. Make upgrading old gear something you would prefer, over just crafting new equipment.

It is kind of bad because netherite isn’t already hard to get and the template just made it harder!

also if you want to keep the template maybe make it more common and can be found every type of bastion.

I would like to add neither horse armor, since there are all types of horse armor except neither

Overall, I like the changes to Netherite Upgrading.  I am glad that Netherite armor/tools/weapons have become more expensive in 1.20.

However, I feel that only being able to obtain Smithing Templates as rare loot from Bastion Structures creates a problem on Multiplayer servers.  The older a map gets, the harder it will become for new players to find templates.  This will especially be true on servers which have a smaller world border.

I think it would be perfectly fine to leave Bastion Loot tables as they are, but it would be very helpful to add another expensive method for obtaining Smithing Templates by curing Zombified Piglins.  There are several possibilities, but if it were up to me, it would involve splashing a Zombified Piglin with a status effect, such as Fire Resistance, and then feeding it many golden carrots, similar to the mechanics of feeding a baby horse to accelerate its growth.  Once the Zombified Piglin was cured, it would have a chance of dropping 1 Smithing Template as a "thank you" gift.

Also, I would prefer it if a Smithing Template wasn't consumed when you applied it, but was damaged instead.  You would need to repair it before using it again.  (This probably applies to the Armor Trim Templates as well, and you should still be able to duplicate them, of course.)

By having netherite templates be non-renewable and only able to be found in structures, it makes it almost impossible for newer players to actually obtain netherite on servers. All Bastions will inevitably be raided within world borders, leaving nothing for others. There needs to be a way for them to be retrieved in a renewable way.

The smithing upgrade for netherite is not a good idea, youre telling me I have to mine for hours to find the netherite, and even then I have to find a template, which will take a lot more time, and by then all my armor will be broken by ghasts and skeletons.

to be honest, this is the only downgrade on this update.

I mean, why bastions? why not fortress's? its already very hard to loot a bastion treasure room, especially in hardcore mode. i think it just make the game riskier for everyone to lose their world like that. make then craftable with a netherite ingot at least. again i say this. the worst feature to be added in this update

We are fine with the old netherite recipe. i think most of us will NOT be getting netherite after this. kinda stupid if you ask me

I didn't like this update at all. To me netherite is already hard to get, and raiding a bastion WITHOUT netherite armor is ever harder.

I suggest the Netherite Upgrade item becomes easier to get (increased odds), or becomes craftable.

    It’s so stupid. You need templates to upgrade armour!?? That are found in BASTIONS!?!?! This makes it so much harder to get netherite now, and I just died with all of it on… and my tools :/ just take it out of the game or make it easier to get. I’ve lost all of my netherite because I fell into the void and it’s going to be very fun to get it back ;-;

I like that you actually need to visit the bastions to get netherite gear, but I don't understand the point of making the upgrade templates and armor trims single use. You are not making the game more difficult by adding the diamond cost to duplicate the templates. You are only making it more grindy by requiring the players to spend more time mining for diamonds.
Mining for ores is my least favourite part of the game. You hve to mindlessly keep clicking at the walls. I usually get enough diamonds to make a full diamond gear then never mine for diamonds again. I am certainly not happy about diamonds being required more.

I absolutely hate this. I have explored a significant amount of my local Nether that I will need to go kilometers to find a new bastion remnant that has this template. This is the worst update I have seen from Minecraft in a very long time. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

cant believe everyone is saying this is a good thing this is one of the worst things they could have ever done to the game, maybe for just armor it would have been a good change, but also making it like this for tools is the dumbest and worst thing ever. and its not like you can somewhat easily get the templates either and making more of them is also very expensive, if it would be something like 7 netherack and 1 diamond instead of how it currently is it would maybe be acceptable but no they just had to make it harder for you to get tools that dont break as fast

what if they were also dropped around 10-20% of the time by piglin brutes, but the brute has to be killed by player, so you can't use lava or flint & steel

To upgrade your diamond tools and armor to Netherite variants, you will now need a Smithing Template called “Netherite Upgrade”, which can only be found in Bastion Remnant chests.

This provdes players with a greater sense of reward, but it also worsens necessity of human moderator intervention on larger, longer-running multiplayer servers, such as through Nether resets. A game as influential and captivating as Minecraft really ought to stand on its own as much as possible, and this is a significant step back on this front.

Another concern is how the default consumption behavior of the item may play out in the social dynamics of different groups, where some players may expect others to preserve these items, while others may be unaware. This can create unnecessary tension and animosity for the game to simply be fun and challenging.

Finally, duplication on a crafting table is a clear outlier in game mechanics. Typically, the ingredients are placed on the left-hand side, with the right-hand side representing a new product. The duplication could be more fittingly and very straightforwardly performed on the smithing table itself. Breaking this paradigm without a compelling reason suggests a lack of care for emergent expectations, a perspective I genuinely want to believe that the team understands.

We’re hoping that this change will unify the gear upgrading system with the introduction of armor trims,

While I understand the intention behind synchronizing these gameplay paths, it's important to distinguish between functional upgrades and cosmetic upgrades. It is not necessary to assume that there should be parity between these two aspects. The system plays reasonably on the cosmetic side, where different players likely want different trims. For tier upgrading, though, the dilemmas seem unwarranted.

as well as make exploring Bastion Remnant structures a more integral part of game progression.

While there may be some metrics by which this marks the game as more complete, I would disagree that structures must contribute irreplaceably to gameplay progression to be worth their inclusion. This philosophy runs the risk of rejecting enjoyable content in favor of a rigid definition of cohesive gameplay experience. It forces Minecraft into a predetermined mold that it may not need to fill, and costs more in terms of player satisfaction than it pays back.

I think this is cool but there should be a option like how you have to have cheats on to toggle like how keep inventory is only able to be toggled with cheats on

Stop asking for gold trims preventing piglin anger.

that would make everyone just wear gold trims instead of putting a color they like, killing the point of trims,

making it so you can tell endgame players apart.

why not leave netherite upgrading the way it was so it is fair to the people who did not have it before 1.20

As much as like the system, I don't like the complication with the netherite upgrading. I think it would be better if the player uses just a netherite ingot, it doesn't keep enchantments, so that players can still have netherite armor even when they haven't explored nether structures. I think the fact that you need the armor trim and you duplicate it with the same one and some materials is pretty stupid, it would just be nice if each one required a related item, or multiple, and a rarer item that also relates in the middle, like a netherite ingot for the netherite upgrade, or an eye of ender for the eye trim.

Netherite horse armor should finally be added. It would also be cool if it makes fire and lava take half as much damage.
