I think this update should be called the adventure update.

Tying the upgraded smithing table to Bastions makes the netherite upgrade rng, which doesn't feel good in practice (in my opinion). Ancient debris can take a while to find despite 2-5 being present per chunk. That controls rng to an extent since you can look in any chunk. Bastions need to be hunted out and are not that common. Rng =/ more difficult, it means more tedium.

Why not replacing the netherack into ancient debris to make a balance between mining and looting it from the bastion, although you can also find some ancient debris on the bastion, I guess it will make it more grindi-er than just getting netherack from a random places..

The new item in Bastions is fine because they can be renewed through crafting. The netherrack in the center should be replaced with an ancient debris or something better than nettherrack. Ancient Debris would make sense and it would make people want to search for Bastions more as the duplication cost for Netherite Upgrade Smithing would be more expensive, but it wouldn't be too much of a grind extra than what already exists.

I completely dislike this new change. It will make people stop using Netherite altogether out of fear of losing their gear.

I'll propose a tradeoff: make the recipe harder to craft, like this, but in exchange make netherite gear immune to cacti / explosions when dropped in item mode (like nether stars) and make ignore the despawn timer completely, thus never truly deleting the gear from the world unless its durability runs out.

That would justify the price increase and the time sink in upgrading. Otherwise, diamond would be good enough for everything.

I'm on board with this feature just to make visiting a bastion once required to go up to the next tier, I think that's cool. I don't think it needs to be easier or harder, and I'm really glad there's a recipe to make more once you get one cuz having something as important as this be that limited would be really problematic imo especially on multiplayer worlds which is where I mostly play.

It's important to recognize that Netherite upgrades are now part of a streamlined process through Smithing Templates. That said, any change to the process shouldn't be one too drastic as to far remove itself from the concept of templates for the sheer same of balance. I do think that Netherite templates are abit too expensive- they already require diamond gear. It's a good change, in my opinion. It's an extra layer of security to ensure the player knows what theyre doing when having Netherite and also weaves it into the game's lore and gameplay a bit smoother than what it used to be, as Netherite could easily feel very separate from the rest of the Nether. Armor Trims in general are also quite costly- so what may the reduction be? Dynamic reductions, like Armor Trims duping cost 4 diamond, Netherite template duping cost 1, etc. could work, but does feel a bit out of place and existing solely for balance, which isn't bad, but again, in this case, does make it feel off. If we don't want renewable diamonds but also want diamonds to be part of the process, I think a fair balance here would be to cut the dupe cost of all templates to 3 diamonds - however, fill the remaining 4 empty slots with whatever other material was previously required. (Example, a Tide template costs now 1 Tide Template, 3 diamond, and 5 prismarine.)This incentivizes a little more reason in mining certain other materials as well, whilst also keeping some level of thought involved in your template duplication.

From my experience, it can get very boring collecting tons of debris for a complete set. If anything, I would reduce the debris cost in half and keep the upgrade template feature as added, that way more fun gaming time is invested at raiding bastions rather than blowing up the nether underground repeatedly. It is better game design. In other words, the grind should not be higher, it should be more meaningful and fun, again this is the true good game design.
The templates could have a different cost, but not in netherite/debris as my original idea is reducing the grind of that material. Maybe add some other unique item looted from a different part of the nether, like blaze powder or wither skull, or even soul lanterns for extra flavour.

I really think that the netherite upgrade item should be unique and not have the capacity of being duplicated on the crafting table, it encourages the player to explore and use diamond tools and armor.

i think that you should add an armour in netherite for horses, and that you can decoreate your armour also with echo shard, making so a glow fingings

Firstly, I LOVE that Bastions are now useful for the progression of the game. This was my only gripe with them when they were first added, and this change makes me incredibly happy there is now an incentive to go to a Bastion.

    But.

I think Netherite tools should be buffed a bit to compensate for the fact they are now a lot harder to come by. Maybe durability increase. Maybe enchantability increase. Sword deals more damage/increased knockback? Something to consider.

I think the texture on the actual upgrade item should be blackstone, basalt, or Nether gold Ore instead of just plain netherack.

as the owner of Minecraft servers it seems correct and wise to me. the one that can be found only in structure if it motivates exploration. please in no way be obtainable by mob drops. is understood by the old guardian. but that's just the exception. the current player is very lazy and wants to do everything through farms. in the duplication of designs it seems correct to me. Hopefully it will show differently in the title and not just in the description.. Hopefully a change in lighting to give effects on armor the netherite update is good for me. but bad that it can be duplicated. again other than getting it by killing a mob. personally it would cancel buff duplication and increase its appearance in structures. why single player worlds is fine, but in multiplayer, it is enough that only one finds to duplicate it

Would be great to see glow ink and/or echo shards used too!

The new upgrade system is, in my opinion, perfect. Adding the upgrade template for netherite makes it so that this equipment tier is no longer seen like diamond, iron, etc, it's not just the end of a linear progression path, but an endgame upgrade option! If you want it, you'll need to go explore the Nether and raid it's Bastions. Beyond that, this change integrates the smithing table features well and opens the door for the implementation of new upgrade materials, with their own "quests" to obtain their upgrade smithing template! Opening up an endgame horizontal progression path of diamond upgrades would be perfect for adding diversity and giving players the ability to choose between different endgame equipments that better suit their playstyles, which coincidentally or not would achieve the self-expression goals of 1.20 even in terms of game progression!

So, in my opinion, this addition has a lot of potential for future expansion and achieves exactly the main objectives stated in the post above! Only change I would make, if player feedback indicates that duplicating the Netherite Upgrade template is too cheap (a statement which I personally disagree with, it's hard enough to find both ancient debris AND now to raid different Bastions in search of a template AND to pay the diamond cost of duplicating them), is to change the netherrack block to an ancient debris one!

I personally think that the recipe for the netherite upgrade smithing template should stay as is and not use ancient debris as some have suggested. I like the idea of having to explore to upgrade to netherite, but I think the amount of ancient debris to get each piece of armor is enough, and adding a bit more grind to upgrade is only an artificial separation between the two stages. Also from experience, getting netherite on servers with more than 2 or 3 people is also already a commitment that many casual players will not want to make, so it is my personal belief that we don't need to add anything else to the recipe.

I think that netherite armor should give more benefits because now it's harder to obtain

I think the new change is a bit too hard but still needed, though I think new players should be able to get netherite after a day or so irl after diamonds. So instead of the Netherite Upgrade being uncraftable, it could be crafted using some rarer items and blocks from the nether and would give 4 on them on craft.

I like the change in principle, but in limited worlds it could severely limit access to netherite upgrades, not to mention when multiple people have to find the upgrades. I would make them rarer, but make them moderately expensive to duplicate so players don't have to spend all their time in the Nether when they could be building or enjoying the game their way. Barring that, I would make netherite armor discoverable in certain chests, as it represents such a minor improvement over diamond. Tools, then, would be the focus of functional upgrades.

Getting Netherite isn’t particularly hard for me playing mostly on servers with a bunch of friends (except that I’m colorblind and it’s hard to spot but that’s unrelated), but it’s tedious and I know a lot of my friends don’t bother. I also think that the Bastion Remnants are very difficult structures, especially for the type of players that aren’t willing to put in time to get so much netherite (and especially because you almost definitely won’t be going into it with netherite armor).

I don't really like the netherite upgrades. For one, they seem easy enough to get from Piglin Bastions, but by contrast they're incredibly hard to duplicate. In multiplayer servers, you're probably going to be duplicating netherite upgrades, and the materials needed to duplicate netherite upgrades seem really grindy and tedious to get, and not in a fun or interesting way. Replacing netherrack with ancient debris or netherite scrap in the recipe doesn't fix the problem, it just adds to the monotony of the game.

I understand the desire to pad out the time between diamond and netherite, but I think this isn't the way to do it. The challenge of getting netherite armour & tools with this change just feels artificially difficult; it's not actually that difficult, it just takes an extremely long amount of time getting all of the resources needed, and not everybody is a "hardcore gamer" with all of the time or patience to do that. It doesn't feel very accessible to players in multiplayer servers, or players who don't enjoy spending most of their time endlessly mining.

A change of netherite armor upgrading for more challenge is really great, but it might force netherite equipment to rely on structures
For example, if you disable structure generations, you can't get netherite equipments at all

So, it could let players craft netherite upgrade templates with 2 netherracks and 7 diamonds
Netherite upgrade templates of piglin bastion will still be a great way of reducing diamond costs

This change will keep creating netherite equipment challenging, but also let players have a lot of other ways to get netherite armor

If you make netherite upgrade templates, make bastions more common, because netherite is already too difficult to get and i am annoyed with this update/snapshot!

I love the idea! But i think it makes it a little too much complicated for its benefits, would be cool if the netherite scraps required for a ingot goes from 4 to 2 or 1.

I feel like the entire community is with me in this one, but gold trims should make you piglinproof on any armour they are applied on. What's more, I feel trims shouldn't be purely cosmetic, but also funcional. Iron for extra durability, diamond for extra efficiency, netherite for fireproofing... Maybe even lapis to make an item cheaper to repare with an anvil and mending, and amethyst to improve an item enchantability? Wither Stars to make an item explosionproof? These are just some ideas I've had over the last few days, but I feel like this is a great chance to add an alternative path to item upgrading that's not based in enchantments. Also, while I like the concept of trim duplication, I don't like that the recipe is expensive for the sake of being expensive. Maybe you could craft an empty trim frame with X diamonds, and then use an anvil or a smithing table to duplicate the trim? Other than that, I'm loving this new feature!

    Personally I like the change.
Some people have mentioned that this will make upgrading to netherite too hard but I disagree. While it will definitely increase the difficulty (which imo will make netherite armor more special and deserved) I feel like exploring for bastions and diamonds isn't that hard (especially with keeping in mind striders, elytras and the new generation).

This is a very good change imo, getting netherite even casually has become far too easy. It shouldn't take a couple hours and a bunch of beds to get the best type of armor in the game, having the player to explore for the Smithing template gives an actual challenge and takes more time to get the gear needed. This is perfect for balancing, and I hope you guys do more stuff like it! (I also think you should make the recipe more expensive, that few diamonds can easily be gotten in a few minutes with the new caves update)

The New upgrading mechanic is good and makes sense to add challenge into obtaining netherite gear, but I feel that making the upgrade template exclusive to the Bastions make it too rare, considering how hard finding a bastion is. I feel these upgrade templates should be able to spawn in other nether structures (Nether fortresses, nether ruined portals, and maybe bring in a new structure to the nether).

We also need to consider Multi-player servers and how easy it might be to Greif by taking all the templates to prevent/make it harder for other players from obtaining netherite, so making the templates craftable via other sources/minerals would be an open idea.
