Good news! The armors are finally visible for longer than the skins themselves. But there are two points I see to improve: 1. Pattern design, very poor. Even prevents to see well in some cases what kind of armor is worn. 2. The new objects don't look like from Minecraft, but from a Mod.

Another cool thing would be to be able to customize the elytras because we have no option to own layers, and I've been playing since the Alpha version.

The Armor Stand in the GUI should display the armor piece when you put it in the armor slot even without the material. Also it should be lit from the front (currently it's from the back)

If I had some critical feedback it would be to allow this system to incorporate custom models into armor. It’s currently impossible to implement custom armor models, especially using something like CustomModelData. Now is a perfect opportunity to introduce a better way of creating armor model assets to the game that would be customizable in resource and data packs.

It could be cool if they added the wither skeleton skull as a trim

One thing I would love to see is the ability to apply glow ink sacs to a trimmed armor to make it glow

Fantastic overall, armor trim looks great, feels great, very intuitive to use so far. Calling them "Smithing Templates" feels a bit awkward though - calling them blueprints fits the world better and allows for future upgrades for other items

I'm on the camp of "not everything has to have a use, especially if it feels forced, features can just exist for the interaction factor and such", I'm fine with trims being only decorative.
But, with them being so expensive (remember: you have to go out of your way to explore to get them, you have to spend a whole item, sometimes rare ones like diamonds and netherite, you need 8 diamonds to copy them, etc.), I'd ponder making it so that each trim has a small benefit.
This would have to be done carefully, to ensure that trims have specific perks that don't outweigh each other (imo, one of the biggest faults of Minecraft survival is that there is a very linear sense of progression when it comes to gear; tiers don't each have specific niches, there is just one that is 100% better than the last one; leather armor and golden tools being the exception).
Given that this would probably complicate more than it would solve, I think the easier option would be to keep them strictly decorative but make them slightly less expensive. Start by making them not be used up by the smithing table, like banner patterns in looms and/or reversing the copying recipe (8 of whatever material + 1 diamond, it would even visually fit with the templates more).

Finally, this is more of a request than feedback: but I would also like if each armour set, regardless of trims, had a somewhat different base shape, making them visually unique, similar to Netherite. Could even help colourblind players!

I think that maybe armor templates shouldn't be destroyed when used but instead, be put into a broken state like an elytra. Then you would, of course, be able to repair them with related materials. I think this would be better than the copy system that is in the current snapshot as with it being possible to copy templates I feel that they lose some amount of value. I mean imagine If you could make copies of music discs; imagine how less rare they would feel if you could just have 20 copies of Pigstep all because one of your friends found a single copy and proceeded to give them out; that would just ruin the point of music discs and I think this same logic applies to templates.

Something that hasn't been addressed here is renewability in SMP servers. As it is, it's far too expensive. Diamonds aren't a renewable resource and neither are naturally generated templates, so there is a bottleneck in the doubling system.

You're limited to the amount of structures that generate (and the templates inside their chests). Even if the community of that particular server manages to always have spare templates to duplicate, getting a ton of diamonds isn't particularly easy, even on endgame, because they can't be farmed. Duplicating lots of templates would require days of manual grinding.

This is a recurring issue in Minecraft. Shulker Shells weren't renewable until Shulker duplication was added to the game and farms could be designed. Before that, server admins would have to reset parts of The End to force Shulkers to regenerate or use modded resources (such as Carpet) to make them spawn naturally.

On another note, I don't think disallowing the usage of the same material of the armor as a trim. That is already possible in survival due to a bug (MC-259356) and it honestly looks quite good.

    1. I think it would be a good idea to put "bright ink" on the colored patterns! I would give the squid ink another use! and the players would be more Shiny!

The item texture doesn't change depending on what trim is on the armor, this makes it harder to tell what I put on my armor...

The Armor stand in the Smithing Table's Menu shows up with arms despite regular Armor stands not having arms (In java)...

I think it's a missed opportunity to not include squid ink as a glowing color option

I'd like to petition for this to be used for tools and weapons as well. You could use the same system, and add a whole new set of patterns.

Echo shards on a trim for a different cyan color

It would be awesome if armor trim could also work similarly like banner, so one pattern can stack on top of another pattern making a combination of pattern that much more complex.

I think armor trims should be added to leather armor and horse armor! Trimmings would look really good on both of them and it seems like a harmless change.

Many are ugly and do not contour with the armor very well. Copying recipe is very expensive.

So wished we could modify the model a bit to create minecraft dungeon-like armors, like the wolf armor or the grim armor or the renegade armor. Just a few model changing templates would be so welcome, pretty please!

Tool Trims: You should be able to use Armor Trim Smithing Templates on your tools too!

i think armor trims should have more materials, like phantom membrane, leather and chains, also it'd be pretty cool if they were stackable.

I feel the animations for the smithing table cycling through the different icons for everything don't match with the things in the crafting menu with items like boats. Either make this the same in the smithing table, which would be preferred, or just do it for the crafting menu. Either way, I like the new stuff. 👍

I think the duplication recipe for cosmetic trims could use some work. Currently these are way to expensive for a purely cosmetic trim. Considering the templates have to be found in loot chests already gives them plenty of challenge to obtain. We don't need them to also cost an additional 7 diamonds to make them feel rare. The netherite upgrade template is a little more reasonable. However if this becomes the official recipe, I expect a buff to netherite armor to go with the additional cost.

It would be great to upgrade our tools as well, (maybe with just one template) I think the possibility of adjusting them to our armor colorwise would be nice.

I've already posted this as a suggestion (I provided more detail there), but I'd really love to be able to invert the armor colors when applying a trim. Like instead of netherite armor with a bit of copper trim, you could press a button to make the armor look like copper with a bit of netherite trim.

Echo shards would be cool to add as a trim option. Would give them a use for people who don't have a use for the respawn compass.

Coal trims would be nice, please. Since Netherite is really expensive and this seems to be just a cosmetic feature, it would be nice to have an alternative for the color black. Also, it would bring consistency to the game, a little bit odd coal is the only ore without this feature.

The Eye trim smithing template poses an issue for Java worlds, in that there are only 128 strongholds in a world. Many servers have already loaded all of their strongholds, which would make obtaining this template impossible. In order to make this item more accessible, I propose that they may be rarely found in the chest contained in the "Fake End Portal" room that exists in some woodland mansions. This way, there is still a way for all players to find one of these templates without making them too easy to find and while still staying thematically appropriate in location.

I agree with many of these comments, duplicating the smithing template is a bit pricy, maybe one diamond in the bottom and 6 iron ingots on the sides! The smithing table has two iron ingots above four wood in the crafting recipe so that would make sense with the updated recipe!

(Edit) maybe the ocean monument smithing template could be moved to the drowned houses? Or a Jolly Roger pirate template for the wrecked ships?

I LOVE this feature! I have been wanting more personalization on armor for a while, because my custom skin gets covered when I wear armor
    .
I like that you have to travel to find templates, but on a multiplayer server it will be very hard to upgrade netherite, and not hard in an engaging way; there just won’t be enough to go around.

I love that for the cosmetic templates you have to travel. It is so rewarding and cool to show off your own armor textures. I’m sad though because in my world with friends we have a world border, so it will be hard to find any :(

My favorite part about this feature is that it costs diamonds to use. Right now, diamonds are essentially useless, because you can trade for diamond tools with villagers. Having a cosmetic use for diamonds is the absolute perfect thing! It is challenging, rewarding, and you can show off to your fiends. I think it’s awesome!

Unfortunately I don’t like the way they look yet. They feel a little clumsy and don’t look particularly cool, except on netherite. I wish I had an idea to make them better but I don really know what it would be.

Overall I love this feature, I love that you need to explore and use diamonds for cosmetics. I like that they are rare but can be duplicated, so you will have to trade with your friends! I LOVE that it costs diamonds. I don’t like that netherite will be rare on multiplayer servers, especially where the border is limited like my server is. What a cool update! So excited!
