We should have the ability to remove armor trim incase someone puts a trim they don’t like and would want the original look back.
Ex: A netherite helmet with rib trim would just turn back into a normal/plain netherite helmet.

Maybe you can use a wet sponge in the smithing table with the armor piece, and it would turn into a normal sponge after use.

I like the concept of the trims. It feels like the start of a huge customisation update that could involve future trims to tools, flowerpots and other small things. Simply to flair the world in a new way.

Seeing the current way to still trim netherite with netherite, it actually could be cool to add texture to an armor with its own ingot. Creating more ways to express yourself and adding textures to plain chestplates, leggings, etc.

Just another thing, capes in game: the player make a banner with a Pattern on the loom, cut the result on the armor stand and Buala! Capes in game!

I think there needs to be a way to remove the trims. It'd be similar to un-dying leather armor with a cauldron or how we can remove enchants with a grindstone. I just think being able to remove trims should be something users can do, this way any mistakes can be undone and it'll prevent the player from feeling frustrated. Armor can be expensive to get, so accidently messing up with the wrong trim would be awful.

It's a great system , having to find each disign in a differents structure is truly great for exploration , maybe the rates are a bit low for some of the structure (Jungle temple and the elder guardian drop are a bit too rare i think)

You can truly be creative with this system since the armor trim are so unique and varied and the system is really intuitive. I think the duplication price is fine but maybe the trim could have something like durability (3-5) uses so it's easier to test and expirement with differents trims without having to go mining every 10 minutes just to duplicate the trim because you're not sure what to wear

Please let us trim swords, tools and shields and add more trim materials:

    • echo shards (with sculk-like animated texture). Echo shards only have one use right now, making them trim materials would give us more reasons to explore ancient cities;
    • prismarine shards (with prismarine-like animated texture);
    • glowstone dust;
    • glow ink sac.

I think the armor ornaments are great, diamond now has more uses, netherite is even harder to get, and exploring will be fun again. The only thing I don't like is that many blacksmithing templates use cobblestone in their recipe, so maybe swapping the cobblestone for other materials would be a good idea.

Copying the armor trims is way, way too expensive. With spending 7 diamonds per trim, who is going to use armor trims on anything other than Netherite? It wouldn't be worth it to use an armor trim on Iron especially...

    My thoughts:
•Armour trim is GREAT. Love the addition to the game.
•It is also EXPENSIVE. I think it should be something rare that you have to find, but perhaps a little less expensive to duplicate once you have it? Or reusable like banner patterns.
•I understand the netherite nerf. Not sure if I’m a fan but whatever, it probably needed some balancing of some sort.
•Horse armour and oxidised copper variants? Perhaps this could be considered?
•Would something of a similar sort be able to be used for different shapes/colours of shield? Different sword designs? This could be a good way to implement sword variations from other cultures, such as the katana, khopesh, scimitar…

Anyway, I’m excited to use this more when it is properly implemented in 1.20!

    Few ideas I have:
    - Adding Armor trims themed around the Wither/Ender dragon and have them be dropped by the respective boss would be neat.
    - Echo shards/glow ink sacs should be usable to perhaps add a glowing affect to the trims.
    - Adding seperate trims for weapons/tools to allow for further customization.
    - Maybe add new seperate visual upgrades that change the base material of the armor visually to be different from the armor's original type. (E.G. Upgrading netherite armor to look like it's gold armor, but it keeps the original stats of the netherite. Could allow for even more customization since the look of the base resource would be entirely in the player's control and not just be forced decision the player would have to make based on strength and armor stats. That, and maybe it could allow the use of redstone/emerald/quarzt/amythest to be usable as a base material - without adding actual redstone/emerald/etc armor!

You should allow for the trimming of armors with the same material. Right now you can Netherite trim Diamond armor and upgrade it, allowing for Netherite trimmed Netherite armor, and it looks pretty cool as you can customize your armor to still be unique while also maintaining the same colors and overall look.

There's no reason not to allow this by default unless you plan on making the trims have some sort of non-cosmetic effect. People should be able to make their armor differently textured with the same colors if a system like this is already in place for different colors.

Leather armor should also have trims! Gold trimmed leather armor would look sweet!

I really like this new feature

But we could add new things like that kind of customization.

Use the finishes on bows and crossbows

    On the trident.

    Horse armor and..

    on elytra

Being able to use echo shards and nether stars as material could both be good additions that look nice and are a bit of a flex, and using glow squid ink to make the designs stand out in the dark could be fun to play with

I would like the possibility to use the trims on horse armor, elytra and shield (maybe something like this for tools?)
But I think the recipe for making the trim multiply is a bit weird; it doesn't make any sense to my why you would need diamonds in order to be able to multiply something like this, because you give it a color with ores, including diamonds. I would like to see another use to multiply the trims, maybe a new item, dye or instead of 7 diamonds the middle item around it and 1 diamonds in the middle.

The way you HAVE to put the trim into the smiting table before you are able to put something else feels a bit weird to me, not sure if this is a bug or intended but it just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Maybe a way to add light to your armor: glowstone, glow ink sac (I think the community is going to like this one), glow berries, something in this category. You can do that the light only glows a little bit for other players, or it actually works like the smooth light you can have with torches in you off hand and shaders.

I am being a little bit picky with these suggestions, because this is just a really cool and unique thing to give players even more reason to explore their world. And who wouldn't like to be creative with your real own armor??

At the moment any armour type below diamond tier almost redundant. It appears mojang has been trying to change this by giving some of the other tiers useful functions (IE: gold detering piglins & leather boots for powdered snow) but I feel they're still quite useless. These armour trims have great potential to make the lower tiers more appealing even in the late game. For example: You could trim leather boots to increase the durability to varying degrees depending on the element used. Perhaps using more expensive things like netherite and the like could even increase protection or give other attributes like knockback resistance. This would late game proof all the lower tier armour sets while not making standard diamond and netherite obsolete. I feel this would be a great change for player expression and armour diversity. Thanks for reading <3

Why can't we put the armor or the ingot/gem if the template slot is empty? Making it so that we can put anything in the smithing table without putting the template first would make it so much more intuitive. For now, it just gets annoying.

Some trims especially in leggings and boots don't feel like there's a difference at all. I don't know how you can make each trim for those pieces look different from one another but yeah for me it's a problem.

7 diamonds to get a copy of a template I think is too much. I'm thinking maybe 5 diamonds instead and use slabs instead of blocks meaning any template that requires a netherrack in its recipe should use a nether brick instead so that you can use slabs and because it just makes sense, too. The color of the template item is more similar to that of the nether brick than the netherrack.

Adding another leggings' worth of diamonds into iron leggings and still ending up with iron leggings seems like a silly equation to me. Maybe the trims should use 2 diamonds to dupe (therefore less than the minimum diamond cost of 4 to make a diamond armor piece) while the netherite upgrade stays at 7.

Please let us use glow ink sacs to make the trims glow in the dark <3. Combining armor and glow ink sac shall be done by crafting. Helmets and boots require 1 glow ink sac while chestplates and leggings would require 2.

It would be cool if we could shine the trim with some glow squid ink, that would give the glow squid another use

Personally not in favor of the change to Netherite, especially if the seven diamond per copy cost sticks around. It would take over a stack of diamonds to upgrade a full set of armor and tools. I understand the desire to make netherite armor and tools more difficult to obtain and add an additional use for diamonds, but this is just adding tedium to something that has worked fine in the game for several years now. Additionally it further disrupts game consistency as netherite would be the only armor/tool set in the game that requires a template.

Requiring a template for the trims is fine as that is a completely new system, although the cost in diamonds for something purely cosmetic is a bit steep. If it stays in its current form, I see this as something that many are excited to do once and then the eagernesses to do it to replacement armor or on new worlds/servers would quickly fade.

just don't lower the price, it's already cheap and there isn't right now a lot of uses for diamond (just because you can trade entire diamond armor and tool sets by 1 emerald with villagers); and if you plan to reduce the cost of the template copies, then nerf the way of getting armor sets from villagers so it is fair

Not sure if this is 100% a good idea but brainstorming here: What if having all pieces of an armor be trimmed with a certain metarial gave a bonus effect, like a set bonus. This would multiply with armor tier so that players, when setting up their main netherite armor, would be able to "choose a path" to upgrade it in.

For example do they spend most their time trading with villagers? They add full emerald trim to their main set to get a mini overall discount. And this wouldn't be on some throwaway iron set because of the tier multiplier. Do they enchant a lot? Full emerald trim for better enchantability. Do they mine a lot? Full iron trim for slight item magnetism. Gold = peaceful piglins, Netherite = fireproof gear, Diamond = slight resistence etc...

    Just a thought!

An issue I haven't seen brought up yet is old worlds getting this. Most structures in the game, while rare, are infinite. You'll eventually find them while searching the world. Except for Strongholds. There are only 128 strongholds in the game, and in an world pre-1.20, many of those are already going to be explored. Since there is only a 4.8% chance to find the Eye Smithing Template in stronghold chests (which there aren't too many of anyway), it is possible that an entire world would not have a single Eye Smithing Template. I think the chances of finding that specific one should either be upped, or make it so there is at least one Template found in every stronghold (perhaps in the library chest since those are limited to two per Stronghold). Of the ones found in other structures, the Jungle Temple will probably be the most difficult due to the lack of chests it has. I'm looking forward to that search, but perhaps those chances should be slightly upped as well.

    Someone else posted

"I think that maybe armor templates shouldn't be destroyed when used but instead, be put into a broken state like an elytra. Then you would, of course, be able to repair them with related materials. I think this would be better than the copy system that is in the current snapshot as with it being possible to copy templates I feel that they lose some amount of value."

This is a good idea, and there could be fun with this on multiplayer servers with designated service person for each template
