Let's talk about Armor Trims!

The upcoming 1.20 update will introduce a way to customize your armor with a new feature - armor trims - and you can try them out right now! Armor trims come in various patterns which you can find in the form of smithing templates hidden across the Minecraft world and can then be crafted with the smithing table in all manner of creative combinations!

As with any new feature, we want to hear your feedback as we continue to fine-tune armor trims ahead of the release. Alongside your general feedback, we also have some specific questions which we’re hoping to help us iron out the design.  

  • How challenging is it to find Smithing Templates, and is it rewarding?
  • Does searching the world for Smithing Templates feel adventurous?
  • Do the diamond requirements for copying Smithing Templates make them feel rare or special?
  • Does applying armor trims with the redesigned Smithing Table feel intuitive?
  • How do armor trims look visually?
  • Are you able to be creative when combining different types of patterns on separate armor pieces?

    Ultimately, I feel that armor trims, as a feature, seem extraneous. Why is something that is purely cosmetic so expensive in game? Is it just to be used as a trophy? 0 functionality on a feature that seems to be the core idea of an update feels off. I understand that it's difficult to strike a ballance between "cool and unique" and "everyone has more of these than they'll ever use". But I have a feeling that this feature will eventually become one that people rarely interact with.

    To that end, it would be foolish of me to complain without offering solutions. In the case of armor trim, it may be finding a way to better implement it into the gameplay loop. As of now it feels like an afterthought. Perhaps slight buffs depending on the trim used. Lapis decreases the cost of enchanting, gold calms piglins ect. Without anything motivating the acquisition of these items, they feel like another thing to clutter your inventory. Which is another problem all together.

    I think it would be cool if you could customize your tool too anf you could find an extra template for tools in a mineshaft

    While a lot of people's are asking for simpler crafting recipes, no recipes or gold trim having an effect on piglins I think it should not. I like the fact that this cosmetic is somewhat hard to replicate (In endgame 7 diamond is nothing let be honest). I feel like people don't think about playability and reward. If it is too simple to get, what the point ? And for the gold, same thinking process, choosing wisely your armor pieces is better I think than having one super armor,

    Pleas make so elytras are customisable too.

    Right now they are just gray and boring.

    I think that the diamonds are extremely expensive for something visual. If they hade an actual effect, I would support it, but right now in is not worth it.

    I think armor trims should be slightly less rare in structures but unreplicatable. because I like the idea of encouraging exploration, but I know players will just get one or two and duplicate it with diamonds.

    Could some armour trim pieces have some sort of effect (buff) per piece. emerald will reduce villager prices, netherite will increase durability, lapis reduce enchant cost at enchantment table by 1 level copper will oxydize and reduse chance of being charged creeper blast resist gold makes piglins neutral (netherite  or requires full set due to reduced amounts of go) diamond arrow reflect chance 2.5% per piece, amythest perfect makes armour piece invisible still swirls are still there quartz noise reduction (bc it looks like white wool) redstone (will power restone when steped on works with armour stands and entitys) iron reduse warden sonic boom damage by 1/2 to 1 heart optional toggle switch in gamerules and world create file or a in game data pack option

    There should be an option to add symbols on the chestplate. For example, knights in medieval times often had lions or dragons to represent their houses. I think it could be cool if there could be a way to imprint sigils on chestplates. These sigil prints could possibly be craftable from heads or obtained by a harder means. Anyhow, It would be a good idea for one to show their personal expression on the armor they have. This would totally match the theme of the update and make armor with it look classical.


    P.S. who wouldn't want a  creeper on their armor?!

    Overall amazing feature, though i think it would be cool if the trims could be stacked on top of each other, kinda like how you can have multiplie banner patterns on a single one, should be the same for Armor Trims, otherwise, amazing feature...

    This has probably been asked a ton of times already, but i feel like it could make the feature more worthwhile...

    You should be able to put together chestplate and elytra and, in case you need it, to detach them

    Te leather armor should be changed, without leather parts, it ruins the armor experience

    Yeah another thing we definitely need is horse armour enchantments. I know I'm straying off the topic but come check out my post about enchanted horse armour- a must-have in the game. Plus, it will look really cool if my horse could have trimmed enchanted diamond armour. Come join my chat!

    Duplication for these templates should use amethysts instead of diamonds. This would do a lot of good things.
    1. Duplicating trims would be more accessible to early game players. They would be able to duplicate without feeling like they've wasted precious diamonds.
    2. It fits perfectly as a use for amethysts because amethysts are already used to duplicate allays.
    3. It gives another function to amethysts which really don't have enough to make them exciting already.

    The Warden pattern is clearly in need of a change. I would like to see the finish of not only armor, but also tools. Please at least make the echo shard have a gradient color (blue with dark blue). Thank you

    This should be not only for armor, but also for tools and weapons. For example, you could customize your silk touch and fortune pickaxes to tell them apart or also with tridents.

    Glowing Armor by using glowing ink sack

    Might be a stretch, but what about adding in glow squid ink sacs as a material?  The glow you would be able to see in the dark but would not give off any light to the surroundings.  Also maybe echo shards for a starry effect.  These two items just need more uses.

    Mojang, you're doing so well with the 1.20 Update. You listen so much to the community, and your're adding so much good stuff. I love the new armor trims.

    Please add echo shards as a material for armor trims. It would give players even more reasons to go to an ancient city and they would look so cool on armor
