A great way to add more uses to amethyst would be to add a crystal based set of blocks made from it. By combining 8 amethyst shards and one dye, you would get 4 blocks of dyed crystal pillar. These would be partially clear on the edges and clouded towards the middle, with horizontal streaks along the block. These would be directional blocks, facing toward the player when placed. If right clicked with a pickaxe, the block would become a point, like a pyramid in the style of dripstone. This would allow player to create crystal and mineral deposits resembling most crystals in the real world, be that diamond, ruby or emerald. These would also need to be able to be undyeable, since amethyst is rare. This could be done with a cauldron. Overall I think a dyeable, translucent and directional block would be very useful to builders, and this would also give amethyst more purpose.
