current painting recipe is any wool block surrounded by 8 sticks. Using the painting item on a flat wall randomly selects an image from a subset of images determined by the amount of flat space (1 x1, 2x2, 3x3, etc), which is good enough for a small handful of images but absolutely nightmarish if Minecraft were to ever get a lot of officially-added images or were to allow custom images to be added.
I propose that the bottom center stick be replaced with a nametag, indicating which image to use. A blank nametag or a nametag with a non-matching name to the included images list would produce a blank canvas (potential avenue for custom images or some sort of art system allowing players to do the painting themselves). A nametag with a name that matched an existing painting would bind that image to the painting item.
A nametag so named could be used separately to change an existing painting to something else.
Knowing the image that a painting would have, perhaps the cursor selection could show the block size outline before placing.
