Adding these 2 simple things will easily make sand renewable:
- Husks drop 1-3 sand (increased upto 7-8 with Looting III)
- Reinforcement spawns match the biome they spawn in (i.e. reinforcement zombies spawning in deserts must be husks)
That's it. These alone are enough to make a ridiculously fast sand farm (see IanXOFour's copper farm for a proof of concept).
This could also be extended to easily get renewable gravel, by making drowned drop gravel.
