With the addition of the Caves and Cliffs update, caves have become incredibly complex and massive, spanning hundreds and hundreds of blocks. When I stumble into a new cave system and begin exploring, I sometimes find myself super lost and have no choice but to painstakingly dig my way to the surface. Thus begins the journey of running around until I can see my base again.
Proposal:
I think there should be some sort of map added to the game that takes a slice of a cave and plots it onto the map. This would solve the issue of players getting completely lost in the absolutely massive caves added by the Caves and Cliffs update, and would be perfect for early-game navigation. Players could use this map at the entrance of cave systems and plot their journeys as they go, making the exit much easier to find without getting completely lost.
How it Would Work
The cave map could either be crafted or could be created from a cartography table and an already existing map. It would take a slice of whatever x or y coordinate the player is standing on (and direction) and would plot a 2D "slice" of that plane onto the map, showing mostly the underground portion.
Currently, when maps are used in the Nether, it only displays the giant bedrock ceiling above the Nether, making navigation impossible using maps in that dimension. But with the introduction of the cave map, this could not only solve underground overworld navigation, but Nether navigation as well.
