This idea is an enhancement of the 'leads' in the post 'Making Minecarts more robust (pushing mobs off tracks, faster top speed etc.)'. The reason for this enhancement is to change the 'leads' to an item which is part of a train.
The new item 'Railway Coupling' can connect minecarts of any kind together.
The crafting could be: 3 Iron Ingots in a row
One railway coupler can connect two minecarts of any kind together. Multiple minecarts can be coupled together to a train.
The coupling can be placed in between and removed from minecarts with the 'Use Item' button.
The coupling holds minecarts together when driving curves or slopes.
