As many members of the minecraft community have pointed out, the wandering trader to do with a touch-up, to say the least. One problem is the horrible trades. What if 50% of all wandering trader trades were, instead of asking the player to give emeralds for an item, asked the player to get specific items from various biomes? These item would range in value, from things like cactus on the low end and jungle saplings on the high end. These trades would be limited, preventing the player from gaining over-powered amounts of emeralds. This feature would encourage the player in a gentle way to explore and find new biomes, and improve the wandering trader. Additionally, the wandering trader could occasionally be found riding his llamas, or with chests attached to there sides. Otherwise, the llamas seem more like decoration then anything else. Finally, with the new camel mob just having been announced (not actually in the game at the time of writing) maybe the wandering trader could spawn with 'Trader's Camels' when in a desert, mesa, savanna, or other hot biome, instead of just the usual llama.
