Groundhogs would spawn in plains biomes, plains forest, savannah biomes, taiga, and would mainly be around water. They would not be able to spawn in any desert or ice biomes, but VERY rarely, you would be able to find arctic groundhogs under snowy taiga biomes or snowy mountains. All groundhog types would not spawn above ground, rather they would spawn underground, around 6 blocks below a tree or a village house. Entrances to the "burrow's" are maximum of 20 blocks away from the main burrow, and the burrow under the tree/village will include a baby groundhog. Adult groundhogs would leave to hunt down arthropods, (including bees) Although, if they are within a 200 block radius of a farm including crops, groundhogs will steal and eat fully grown beetroots, carrots, potatoes, wheat, sweet berries, mushrooms, dandelions, and player planted glowberries, leaving the crops to go back down to the first stage. Although, while they are eating potatoes, sometimes it is actually a poisonous potato, and while it is poisioned you get a green groundhog, and after that it will leave your crops alone for a longer period of time. They also eat naturally spawning crops (such as sweet berries), so if a groundhog finds a place infested with goodies, they can actually make a new burrow and live there, bringing the baby with them. Abandoned burrows can also start to generate cobwebs inside of them, and that is everything you need to know about the Groundhog! (Maybe a scarecrow for your crops too!)
