We have 10 hearts, 20 health points, but it is possible to receive decimal damage, for example 2.5: in this case, we only see that we lost 1 heart at the first hit, but then 1.5 hearts...
It would be very nice to see if we took decimal damage, maybe by reducing the heart in size: smaller the heart, the more decimal damage it has on it, or maybe when we receive a set decimal damage, the heart changes the texture a bit, to communicate that we lost less than 1 point of health
