The existence of broken obsidian portals in the Overworld and Nether are an awesome feature, and they tend to indicate that sometime in the past some civilization before the player made the journey between dimensions. There are a lot of ruins, a zombie outbreak, etc. throughout the Overworld as well. It's only natural for there to be a hint that ancient villagers (the most sophisticated NPCs present) made contact with the Nether, and it didn't go well.
Corrupted Village
A corrupted/occupied village can generate in any of the normal biomes, and appears as a village that has been blown up, trampled, and set aflame. There's a broken Nether portal nearby, along with a generous number of zombified piglins.
Corrupted Village: The Other Side
The corrupted village doesn't end in the Overworld ... at its corresponding Nether-side coordinates, there are more structures. The Nether-side structure has a pre-lit portal, so that if the player repairs the Overworld-side portal, it links to the Nether-side one. This Nether-side portal is encircled by a wall and surrounded by soul sand- the area is an outpost full of hostile piglins with archer towers and a few iron cages containing zombified villagers. There are remnants of failed villager expansion, like trampled farmland and the bare frames of village-style houses. The presence of various illagers, working in conjunction with the piglins, would also be interesting and pose a nice challenge.
