Paintings Like Maps

I was hanging out with my friend on Minecraft, when I realized that a painting she had placed down was three blocks on my side and one on hers. So, of course, I decided not to be reasonable and I just burned the painting. But that got me thinking. Why can we not just place paintings onto item frames like maps? I realize that it would only work for one block paintings, but it would make getting a one-block painting that you are looking for soooo much easier.
