With the recent WWDC event from Apple (June 6th 2022) Apple announced Metal 3 and two new APIs for gaming.
Metal 3 allows faster and better performance games on Apple Silicon (A Series & M Series Chips).
Metal 3 allows better performance in games while using less of the GPU’s power, making Metal 3 essential for performance in Minecraft.
A new API called “MetalFX Upscaling” does the following: “Render complex scenes in less time per frame with high-performance upscaling and anti-aliasing. Choose a combination of temporal or spatial algorithms to help boost performance.”
Another API introduced is “Fast Resource Loading API” which allows game loading to be faster. Allowing faster world creations for Minecraft.
Some other features of Metal 3 from Apple are; Improved Raytracing Support and Efficiency, Offline Shade Compilation (The compiler can generate GPU binaries at project build time to eliminate in-app shader compilation, helping games improve performance and reduce load times) and Metal Backend for PyTorch (The new Metal backend in PyTorch version 1.12 enables high-performance, GPU-accelerated training using MPS Graph and the Metal Performance Shaders primitives)
Overall, I think if Mojang were to make Minecraft run a lot better on Mac while increasing performance and also introducing new features to the Game, Metal 3 and it’s new APIs are the way to go.
Look forward for Metal 3 to added to Minecraft Java Edition.
