The End Islands and Chorus "Reefs" as stands lack a true fauna or native species. That's where the Stragglers come in. The void is supposed to feel bigger than the player, like looking into space, and I think a perfect way to explore that is by making large Ghast sized insect like creatures drifting through the void around you in herds.
Stragglers are the mega-fauna and guardians of the chorus reefs, slowly hovering over players who break their chorus plants stalks, latching onto them with their tentacles making a shrill sound and teleporting them away. They share a hive mind, and are capable of alerting more Stragglers to chase the player.They ignore Enderman since they lack eyes, but are deathly afraid of Shulkers who naturally shoot at them.
When Stragglers die, they drop 0-2 Bonemeal, or alternatively a Carapace item with possibly some armor or shield crafting functionality. Stragglers are breed with two Chorus Flowers, and will follow the player while they are holding a Chorus Flower. Using a Saddle and Chorus Fruit on a Stick, the player can ride Stragglers through the Void, making for less Elytra intensive flights through the end while looking for end cities. Let's be completely real here; everyone wants a flying mount for Minecraft, and the end deserves it. It deserves something Mojang.
