Let the player be able to be hired by the village to protect the village from monsters and pillager thieves.
There would be a new pillager mob which would be a thief that shows up at night to steal stuff from the village. If you fend off enough thieves as well as some monsters from the village, a new villager (maybe the village leader) would appear in the day to offer you a job of protecting the village from monsters and thieves and be rewarded over how many monsters and thieves you fend off. The rewards could be a varying amount of emeralds that you could use to then trade with the villagers which would also give the blacksmith more of a reason to exist.
This kind of gameplay could encourage players to build more iron golems to fight alongside them or make traps to better fend off monsters and thieves from entering the village.
