Soul shards were added in this week's snapshot (22w14a).
The exploration element is fantastic but there are concerns about world size and lag generation for large worlds on multiplayer servers, along with any item of fixed quantities on multiplayer servers that is non-renewable. I would recommend that there be a chance for a wandering trader to have a few soul shards for sale (perhaps a max of 4 per sale per wandering trader spawn) in the update as well, both so servers can have a renewable chance to obtain these items and for perhaps a reason to get players interested in finding "more shards" to finish off their compass, thus starting a hunt for ancient cities.
