Minecraft texture/model updates often break old builds and split the community. Resource packs help, but they are global and limited. I propose an official, built-in way to use legacy textures and models through commands—no external pack required.
Bundle a small legacy asset library into the client, with unique IDs. Then commands can reference them:
· Items:
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[minecraft:item_model="minecraft:legacy_diamond_sword"]
· Blocks:
/setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:fire[minecraft:block_model="minecraft:legacy_fire"]
/fill ~ ~ ~ ~10 ~10 ~10 minecraft:water[minecraft:block_model="minecraft:legacy_water"]
This also covers blocks without item forms.
· Entities:
/summon minecraft:zombie ~ ~ ~ {legacy_texture:"minecraft:legacy_zombie"}
Like custom player heads, the model ID stays with the object and uses the client’s built-in library. When unused, it takes almost no extra space.
Purpose: Preserve old creations without a global visual switch, and let players mix old and new textures where they want.
Significance: Protects creative work, supports builders, and reduces community division. The data-driven model system already exists, so this is a natural extension.
Please consider adding this feature.
