The current ice caves (26.4 Snapshot-4) have a lot of potential, but in its current state, that potential will never be realized. I'll jump straight to the point: everything here is about expectations not meeting with reality, because of details.
Frostbite:
- It should give 30 seconds (600 ticks) of Freezing, instead of 3s (60 ticks). — 3 Seconds alone are insufficient to present any form of threat, making the mob underwhelming and hindering its uniqueness.
Generation:
- When you go to a Ice Biome, the expectations are: "Underground must have a ice cave". But with current generation, that's no the case. There is no connection between the surface biomes and ice caves, at least not a consistent connection. This hinders the adventure and experience.
- Brittle ice is hindered by the terrain generation — it presents a interesting idea, but not a real threat os element worthy of consideration.
- Icicles are a non-factor within big ice caves, because the ceiling is too far. In small ice caves, they present no risk at all.
- Sometimes cave paths cut out. If brittle ice generates in those areas, the player would be able to see that there are more caves ahead.
Good ideas, lackluster execution. The devil is in the details.
