As it stands, the sift dimension feels baren. I wouldn't have the motivation to visit in survival. To solve this, the geomancer could be included. It makes perfect sense and fits the Minecraft feel.
Ancient city origins:
As the current race that inhabited the ancient cities is currently unknown, the Illager is a perfect candidate. Their grey skin came from living underground, apart from their villiger counterparts. When the warden came and broke up their sobriety, half of them fled through the portal and the other half migrated above ground to create the Pillagers who raided the surface dwellers.
Society in the sift:
The Geomancer fits perfectly into the sift aesthetic and could act as an elder/leader to small Illager tribes. Perhaps a magic centered society that is violent to the player.
Details/lore:
While the Illagers have always been hostile, separated portions of this race could leave room for change. We don't know how long they have been separated. Adding the mechanic of placing an ominous banner on your head could make them passive and give them the ability to trade sift items. This is because they recognize their brethren on the banner. They believe you have made contact with their kind, giving hope that their race provaled in the overworld.
They could give a way to then make peace with the overworld Illagers and possibly gain access to friendly Illagers for more diverse villager cities. This idea will give incentive for more players to reach the sift.
