I think ice spikes would fit really well with the ice biome we have, but I think we first need to change the terrain generation for that biome; the giant ice spikes there are ugly and too simple. Mojang has already improved the sulfur springs—they used to be simple, but now they're larger and more detailed.
It would be amazing to have more modern terrain generation for this biome, featuring moderate ice spikes emerging from the tops of the ice peaks—though the spikes should be sparse, somewhat like the ones in the images.
These spikes would form randomly on the peak, but there would always be one at the very top; not every top block would have an ice spike, to make the generation look more natural.
Furthermore, spikes would also form beneath them.
Most or all of them wouldn't be large thorns.
This wouldn't harm the ice caves, because we would still be able to find those unique ice crystals, and the caves would still offer easy access to calcite blocks and ores; ultimately, the ice caves would remain unique, and the ice biomes would get a very interesting visual refresh.
