I'm suggesting an official command-based way to preserve and access old textures and models, without needing resource packs.
Purpose: Texture and feature updates often break old builds and split the community between players who prefer different visual eras. Old creations should remain viewable and usable long-term.
What it would do: Bundle a small legacy texture/model library into the client, with IDs like minecraft:legacy_diamond_sword. Then players could use commands to get items with their old appearance, for example:
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[minecraft:item_model="minecraft:legacy_diamond_sword"]
This works like custom player heads: the data stays with the item, no external pack is needed, and it takes almost no extra space when unused. It would preserve old textures and models, support builders, and reduce community division.
