With more recent game drops showing initiative to add features that both:
encourage player creativity (cushions, cloth stairs/slabs, sulfur cube)
and
Accept long-wanted features (cushions, autumnal biome, icy caves)
I believe now is a perfect time to look backwards at a simple rebalance that would achieve both goals, and since the new update adds yet another member to the growing cast of cave biomes, I think this next game drop would be a perfect time to change it:
I think the standard 'Rail' recipe should give x64 rails.
Minecart-ing as transportation is too expensive to use early game when most players need iron for things like armor and anvils. Minecart-ing is too inconvenient to use late game when you've already got a horse and ender pearls. Minecart-ing is a complete joke end game when players have an elytra.
The current minecart is completely useless as a result of these decisions, but enhancing the crafting recipe to give the player an entire stack of rails would fix that. Neither horse nor elytra suffer as a result of this change as "exploration" isn't a goal of laying down minecart rails. I can't imagine this change would be too difficult to implement across versions, and would be a great thing to quietly slide into a game-drop...
Giving players ample breathing room to use rails wherever they choose would both:
encourage player creativity (practical mineshafts, unique building techniques)
and
Accept a long-wanted feature (enhancing the neglected minecart)
6 iron = 64 rails!!!!
